Pol Roger dinner at Blanch House on 21 September 2006Oliver Wines are delighted to present 5 Champagnes from one of the regions most respected producers, Pol Roger, including the magnificient Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 1996 on Thursday 21st September 2006. To accompany these great bottles, the restaurant at Blanch House has prepared a four course menu just for the occasion. Please click here for details. Pol Roger remains one of the few family owned champagne houses and is arguably one of the least ostentatious of the region. The tiny production ensures that their champagnes are of the finest quality and Pol Roger has enjoyed a special relationship with the UK market for many years. Famously, Winston Churchill became their best and most influential customer after meeting Odette Pol-Roger at a lunch at the British Embassy in 1944. He went so far as to name a winning horse in her honour. In 1984, they returned the compliment by labelling their prestige cuvee in his name. While we may usually associate champagne with moments of celebration, it has to be said that this alone misses out on the wonderful marriage champagne has with good food. The menu for this evening has been specially prepared to compliment the various styles of champagne that Pol Roger produce and we are confident that you will find them to be as enlightening as they are enjoyable. For those who feel an evening cannot solely be based on fine champagne (heaven forbid!), we have one of St Emilion's finest château to provide a bridge to take us from the main course to the dessert, with which the unique Cuvée Rich from Pol Roger concludes the evening. We are also honoured to have James Simpson MW from Pol Roger to enhance the enjoyment of their fine wares and impart his insider information as to why Pol Roger offers something unique from this renowned region.
