Wines from the New World. From the iconic Meerlust Estate in South Africa, to the eclectic Little Rascal Arneis from Coopers Creek in New Zealand. Read on....
We have tended to focus on wines from the established "Classic" regions of Europe, so it was about time that we put together an offer on some of the excellent wines that we have tasted recently from the New World. Perhaps the Chardonnay grape has suffered somewhat at the hands of over enthusiastic wine makers, modelling their wines on the big, oak enhanced blockbusters that wine critics used to rave about. Today there are many examples of a more subtle and even terroir-led approach to wine making - less Dolly Parton and more Keira Knightly! Take note of the Margaret River offerings from the renowned Vasse Felix in Australia. For the "anything but chardonnay" brigade, we have an enticing Arneis from Coopes Creek in New Zealand, or try the Chenin Blanc from Kanu in South Africa. As the the reds, the Holy Grail that is Pinot Noir has really come of age thanks to grower's better handling of this challenging grape. New Zealand perhaps leads the way for alternatives to Burgundy, check out the Prophets Rock Pinot, but Saintsbury Pinot Noir from California is a richly endowed wine that is also worth buying. The South Americas have been hitting the headlines for some time and deservedly so. The innovative winemakers from the classic regions of France have certainly utilised their skills and passion in Chile and Argentina forming strong partnerships, taking full advantage of the enormous potential these countires offer. As such, we are delighted to offer the wines from Casa Lapostolle in Chile and Bodega Norton in Argentina, one of the country's most respted names, is also responsible for crafting world-class wines. We are also delighted to be offering the iconic wines from Meerlust in South Africa, responsible for some of the most sought after wines in the world. Featured Producers The Privada used to be the family's private reserve and is now Norton's signature wine, as well as one of Argentina's most respected wines. Produced from 50 to 80 year old vines, this Malbec/Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend has great concentration. Entirely matrued in French oak barrels. Packed with dark berry fruits and spices. Excellent weight of fruit due to aging in French oak, although the oak does not really show on the palate. "The 2003...reveals gorgeous notes of creosote, blueberry liqueur, blackcurrants, licorice and cedar. Full-bodied with great purity, real structure, wonderful sweetness (from glycerin), ripe tannin, and a long, heady finish, it cun be drunk now or cellared for 15 or more years". Robert PArker, 94 points. A big, broading wine that delivers rich, ripe fruit and silky tannins on the palate. This offers a classic expression of terroir and should age well. Packed with dark berry fruits and a hint if gun flint. "Exhibits a bouquet of cedar, wood smoke, scorched earth, black cherry, and blackberry. Tightly wound but well balanced, this densely packed wine needs 6-8 years in bottle to reveal its full potential. Drink through to 2025" Robert Parker, 92 points. No mistaking where this wine is from. A knock-out of a Shiraz - blackcurrants, spicy, rich and silky. "...It has great refreshing acidity as well as nutty, but not overpowering sweetness". Jancis Robins MW, February 2008, Purple Pages "...the thing to serve with very sweet food for it is a dentists delight" Jancis Robinson MW, February 2008, Purple Pages 100% barrel fermented in French oak gives this wine a wonderful combination of custard, which orchard and citrus fruits, offering a very poised and elegant wine on the finish. Very aromatic with a tropical fruit twist on the palate. Full and creamy, with notes of lychees and honey. The renowned oenologist Michel Rolland consults exclusively for Casa Lapostolle in Chile. This fruit driven Chardonnay is superb with Thai food. Notes of butterscotch and vanilla on the palate and nose, with a loveley crisp, clean finish.
