St Joseph Rouge 2005, Domaine Courbis

Rich dark red colour and a bouquet of red berry fruit lead to a rich full bodied yet mellow wine made entirely with the Syrah grape. The wine is allowed to macerate for 12-30 days depending on the vintage and is matured in oak barrels with 50% in barrels of 1 wine the balance in barrels of 2 or 3 wines. Vina Izadi Rioja Reserva Alavesa 2002

Izadi is based in Villabuena, a town of 300 inhabitants and 35 wineries in the Rioja Alavesa, the highest part of Rioja.

Izadi source their fruit from 186 hectares of vineyard. All the vineyards are either owned or leased on long-term contracts, so they have full control over production, which proved essential in a vintage like 2002. The distinctive white calcareous vineyards are mostly planted with Tempranillo, but there is also some old vine Graciano and a few experimental varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon.

Subtle note of sweet vanilla oak on the nose, medium bodied and soft easy red fruit on the palate. I think the 2002 Rioja's will drink at their best while the fruit retains its vibrancy. Drink from now until 2012.
